In the days before leaving, one task still remained. I still needed to rent a car for the trip. I had made reservations with both Hertz and Avis to ensure that I’d have no trouble getting a car when I needed it. I asked several times on the phone if the deals were “unlimited free miles”, and they assured me they were.
Day 1: Friday, 1998-06-26:
The day came. I had picked up the rental car two days before to ensure everything was all right. It was a brand new Buick Park Avenue with only 353 miles on it. I wasn’t expecting a completely new rental car, so I had to cancel the appointment I had with my car mechanic to go over the vehicle and look for any problems that might prevent me from completing a long trip. I filled the gas tank at lunch, and then, at precisely 5:00 PM, bolted out the door of my office and roared off towards the freeway.
From the southwest corner of Charcot Ave. and Bering in San Jose, in California (#1), I went east on Charcot to Zanker, south to Brokaw, then east to I-880, north to Mission Blvd., east to I-680, north to I-580, east to I-205, east to I-5, north to I-80, east on I-80 across the Sierras to Winnemucca, Nevada (#2), where I stayed in the Motel 6.
The tally for the day was 2 states and 421 miles.
